Liber Chronicarum - The Nuremberg Chronicle - An Original Woodcut-Illustrated Leaf from the Latin Edition of 1493 – Published by Anton Koberger for Sebald Schreyer and Sebastian Kammermeister, 1493. An immaculately preserved, original single folio leaf, numbered CCLXXXVI (286), from the first edition of "Liber Chronicarum". "The Nuremberg Chronicle", as it is more commonly referred to, is considered the first attempt at a comprehensive account of world history, covering the time o...f creation to the year of the book's publication. More ambitious, however, was the task of illustrating the book. William Pleydenwurff and Michael Wohlgemuth were chosen to complete this daunting job, eventually producing 1, 809 woodcuts for the large folio (with the help, it is now believed, of Albrecht Dürer). This particular leaf is in a black frame, with a white matte over black. The viewable verso of the leaf contains what is perhaps the earliest woodcut illustration of the cities of Poland in composite. 23 lines of text appear below the illustration. The concealed recto of the leaf contains 47 lines of text (please see the accompanying photographs). This magnificent woodcut depicts composite features of The Kingdom of Poland's major cities, complete with depictions of walled cities, churches, small developed islands, towers, a bridge, and ships sailing in and out of port. Below the woodcut are twenty-three lines of Gothic text discussing the geography of Europe, referring to Strabo, the ancient geographer, several times; Bavaria, Austria, Salzburg, the Danube, and the Italian Alps are all mentioned. A beautifully preserved ORIGINAL leaf with only a few tiny pinholes, all of which are nearly imperceptible. Bibliographic references: S-308 [Goff], M40784 [GKW], 14508 [Hain].
