I have tried to do a better job of identifying this sword but I can only get close and have no real idea of its’ age, other than common sense and observation.
The total sword length is 23-⅞”. The blade alone measures 18”. The hilt measures 6”. The total length of the sword in the sheath is 25”. The sheath is 19-¾” long.
I ...think this is a very old sword because of the damage/wear the whole thing shows. The brass decoration on the top and tip of the sheath is pretty beat and I believe there was more, in the middle but that is gone. I wondered if the decoration was gold but it seems too brittle for that and it also doesn’t seem weighty enough.
The hilt is made of some kind of natural horn or something because it has many chips and worm holes. That also makes me think it is very old. I suppose it could be wood too, but it doesn’t “feel” like wood. The hilt also has a repair. It looks like someone tried to repair a break on one side with some wood filler. I also see a small crack where the silver hilt decoration comes into the tapered guard piece that blends the hilt into the blade.
The blade is the Yataghan style and fits very tightly into the sheath. The blade has a T spine that gives it some extra strength. The blade is also decorated on one side and signed on the other side with inlaid silver. I believe the hilt metal work (the strap that runs up one side and down the other) to be silver as well. I tried to show in one of the pics how the blade wanders just a bit. All in all it is fairly straight but there is some deviation from absolute straightness. I tried to identify the writing on the blade but made no progress - Aramaic looked promising but that is too strange.
