You are bidding on a very nice antique French 8 day brass striking carriage clock - it does not have any makers name, just 'Made in France'. I would say it dates from the late 1800s or possibly the very early 1900s. It strikes the hours in full and the half hours with a single strike, striking being on a wire gong in the rear of the clock. It is fitted with a later Gorge compensated lever escapment, which is a replacement for the original, w...hich would probably have been a cylinder escapement.The clock has had a very full service which involved being fully dismantled, including the platform escapement, with jewels removed where possible for cleaning, then having both a manual and ultrasonic clean. Naturally, both springs were removed from their barrels, checked and cleaned before being properly lubricated and fitted back. The clock runs for its full length of wind which is around 8 days and comes with a modern brass carriage clock key. The clock is wound and set by this key through the glazed back door. The movement is in nice, original condition. The white enamel dial is excellent, with no chips or hairlines at all, and nice clear Roman numerals. All glasses are bevelled, including the top rectangular one, and are excellent with no chips. The brass case is all original with matching internal numbers - there are some places with light age related marks/pitting, but not very noticeable when you look at the clock - a nice case for over 100 years old. The back door closes nicely as it should, the solid, ornate handle is tight, and the clock has its baseplate. The case has been fully dismantled - it has not been over polished - all polishing has been done by hand to preserve the detail. It has been coated in a very high quality wax specially made for the brass plates and cases of clocks, which acts has a tarnish inhibitor. It is approximately 11cm tall to the top of the case, and just under 15cm tall to the top of the handle when it is up. The clock has a base width of just under 8cm.I have tried to be very accurate with my description and mention everything I feel the buyer should know, however, please contact me if you have any questions or need any further information.
The clock will come with a service report showing what work has been done on the movement, and I will also enclose a set of my clock information sheets, written generally to cover the set-up and maintenance of most types of clock.
