Here he remained two years. During the I...ndian War of 1745, he joined several "scouts, " and upon the commencement of the "Old French War, " in 1755, having lost his wife, he enlisted in the regular service, and was in most of the war, being under WOLFE on the "Plains of Abraham."The Scottish Rite of Freemasonry was first brought to the New World from France in the year 1763. Bro.Stephen Morin of Bordeaux established the 25 Masonic Degrees of the "Rite of Perfection" in the British West Indies. In 1767 Stephen Morin's close associate Henry Francken transported this new Masonic Rite to Albany, New York, where he formed the first Ineffable Grand Lodge of Perfection in North America, with civil engineer Bro. William Gamble serving as its first master.Bro. William Gamble, the first Master of Ineffable Lodge of Perfection, was a Civil Engineer by profession and a draftsman of ability. It was he who, probably, executed the "Constitution and Patent" of Ineffable Lodge and he also prepared tracing boards for many of the Degrees.Fort Herkimer was a fort located on the southern side of the Mohawk River, opposite West Canada Creek, in central New York, United States. The fort was first built in 1740, around the homestead of the Herscheimer (Herkimer) family. In 1757 during the Seven Years War, young Captain Nicholas Herkimer (later to be a heroic general in the Revolutionary War) had his first military command here when the French attacked German Flatts in 1757 and 1758. It has originally known as Fort Kaouri (Fort Bear).Barent Roseboom was born in October 1736. He was the son of Hendrick M. and Maria Ten Eyck Roseboom. He grew up in businessman's home on Pearl Street. In October 1759, a Barent Roseboom (perhaps he was the sole individual at-risk) was serving in the British supply corps under William Gamble at Fort Herkimer. He was a bachelor but a member and pewholder at the Albany Dutch church.Barent also was a homeowner in Albany's second ward. He was known as a skipper and also called a mariner - implying that he sailed beyond the river. In 1766, he was appointed firemaster. He served in that capacity again in 1779 - but then for the first ward. In 1782, he was appointed chimney viewer. He also was reimbursed for services by the Albany government. In 1766, he joined with his neighbors in protest of the Stamp Act when he signed the constitution of the Albany Sons of Liberty. At the outbreak of the war in 1775, he was offered a commission as lieutenant in an Albany militia company. He declined stating that he was too old. Afterwards, he received a bounty right in conjunction with the Albany militia regiment. After the war, he seems to have lived with his brother, Hendrick. In 1790, he was accounted for in Hendrick's first ward household. Please view the other historical and Civil War related documents I'll be listing this week.SEE SCAN.I now accept PAYPAL but PREFER other forms of traditional paper payment.
