Information:
Reference Number: Avaluer:6914349Material: Wood Ebony and mixed media
Original/Reproduction: Original
Original Description:
This OLD and believed to be antique statue is known as Mr Muia, a Kenya witch doctor.  The provenance of this statue begins with the estate we purchased it from; the previous owner was 93 years old, a musician and world traveler who collected amazing artwork and instruments from around the world (mostly Africa and Asia).  Then there is a small booklet attached around the statue’s arm (see pictures for a few pages). This booklet’s cover page reads: Warangal Witch Doctor And... Fortune Teller Kenya.  On the back cover it says this is writen both in Swahili and English.  The text in English is:In Kenya we’ve some people known as Waganga witch doctors.  These people treats somebody by giving him additional medicines which is from wild trees.  Trees are dug then cooked in a pot with water, then after boiling the water is taken out, put in a bottle then the patient is given to be taking a little a home.  The trees are different according to sickness.  Some for gornorrealh, syphese, flu, coughing, stomach ache, headache, etc.  Before patient is treated, he’s examined and questioned different questions and then is given medicine.  There are some other patients told to lie down.  The witch doctor reads his/her hand lines, give you some medicine for preventing bewitched by your enemies.  Thank you very much.  This carving shows you Best Known Witch Doctor in Kenya, along the road to Mombasa about 45 miles from Nairobi City.  He is Mr. Maia
The sculpture is signed on the foot as shown in my pictures.
I also consulted with a friend and neighbor from South Africa who lived and worked in the area that this statue originally was created.  She and her husband were ministers there before moving to the USA and it is her opinion that this is very old and authentic. She believes this statue also represents a Chief because of the cape being indicative of a tribal leader.  She told me the y shaped staff is appropriate to the desert people of Kalahar desert and she actually has one.  She said these are used for everything...hunting, weeding, digging...everything.
I have also taken this item to a gallery in Scottsdale Az that specialises in Art from Kenya and was told it is an Ebony fetish.  It is very old and rare.
Please see the pictures for the detail and condition of this creation.  The statue is carved wood with what appear to be teeth from an animal tied as earrings, necklace, behind ankles.  There is a signature on one foot.  The cape is rusticly woven and in good but a bit frayed and gritty.  He is sitting on a stool.  Measurements are approximately 14” to the top of the staff and 11.5” to the top of the head
