Antique Victorian Roll - Top Butter Dish/ Caviar Dish With Rams Head & Hoof Feet
Item History & Price
Reference Number: Avaluer:696635 | Product: Butter dish / caviar dish |
Composition: Silver Plate | Style: Victorian |
Brand: William Alexander, Glasgow? | Age: 1850-1899 |
The four feet are rams' heads (I believe) and the feet are 'cloven hooves'. The glass liner allows space for crushed ice below for serving chilled caviar, I assume.
This caviar dish / butter dish measures 8" x 5¾" and is 5½" high (20cm x 14.5cm x... 14cm) with the lid closed. Measurements are approx and taken at the widest points.
There is a maker's stamp on the base which is very hard to read. It appears to be WA & S. If so, it is possibly William Alexander of Glasgow, but this is by no means certain.
This antique roll-top dish is in remarkable condition for its age. There are some minor marks but the plating is in good condition. It has a very small dint on the lid which is just at the top of the engraving. It isn't obvious and has proved hard to photograph.
The glass liner is the original and is in good condition with no obvious damage.
