from my personal collection:
It's not a R@lex, it's a Gruen . . . made in the factory that, in the old days, literally used to be next door to R@lex. And the company founder, Dietrich Gruen, was friends with the Wilsdorf Brothers.
Not much is known about Gruens, and it's hard to date them, because their ...records were destroyed in a flood. They did make some VERY nice movements that were far better than they needed to be for the types of watches in which they typically were installed. By the 1950s, they were out of business.
The present example was provided with a 15 Jewel movement that was adjusted to two positions. It features a swan's neck regulator for extremely precise adjustment, which is something normally seen only in very high-end marques. Also, the plates are decorated with "Geneva stripes, " which can be seen in Photo #11, another sign that its makers took craftsmanship, and even artisanal details that most customers would never know about, very seriously. The stripes appear to have been milled into the metal, and are fairly shallow so as not to compromise this calibre's emphasis on thinness of the movement as well as the entire watch.
This Gruen measures 43.5 mm in diameter not counting the winding crown, and is only 8 mm thick including the slightly domed crystal. Weight is aprox. 1.9 oz. or 53 gm. The movement was made in Switzerland, and the 15 K gold-filled case, also marked GRUEN on the inside of the caseback, was made in Canada, likely to save money on import duties.
In very good condition for an 80+ year old timepiece. Running strong and keeping VERY accurate time. With a few dents smaller than the size of the period at the end of this sentence just below the winding crown, these nearly disappear at actual size, and are the only real damage to the metal. Clear and undamaged crystal. The faint black marks on the dial are greatly exaggerated by these highly magnified images and look like they are on the surface might mostly wash off when you have the watch serviced years down the road from now.
Of course I will miss it, but I have made a firm decision to rationalize my collections. In short, I simply can no longer keep them all.
