HISTORY:In 1987, in partnership with Mobira, Nokia launched one of the first "portable" phones: the Mobira Cityman 900. The latter weighed 760g and measured 83 x 43 x 79 mm. It was familiarly called "Gorba", since it was used in 1987 by Gorbachev then president of the Soviet Union.
The Cityman was a mobile phone marketed in 1987 by the Finnish telecommunications manufacturer Nokia. The Cityman was Nokia's first mobile phone. Having equipped car phones since the 1970s the company has set out to conquer the cell phone market. The Nokia Cityman often considered a masterpiece of Scandinavian design was much smaller and lighter than its competitor of the time the legendary Motorola DynaTac 8000.
In addition to the brick phone model, which was copied from the Dynatac model, the Cityman included revolutionary features for its time, such as the monochrome display showing the duration of calls, the ability to adjust the keypad, and the lighting. 'screen. It also offered a battery charge and signal strength indicator.
The "Gorba-phone"In Finland, the phone got the nickname "Gorba" as the president of the Soviet Union Mikhail Gorbachev who used a Nokia Cityman 900 to make a call to Moscow to his Minister of Communications at a press conference in October 1987 in Helsinki.
The phone also appeared in a television commercial by the American financial service provider Eagle Star Investment. The 1988 ad features the British actor Rowan Atkinson taking on the role of a hacker calling his eagle financial star advisor via a Cityman.
Nokia's first mobile phone was the Mobira Senator which was manufactured from the Nordic Mobile Telephony (NMT) system as early as 1982. The Nordic countries were well ahead of France in the development of mobile phone technology. Mobira Cityman 900 was the first mobile phone developed for the NMT system.
It's the Nokia Cityman that has launched Nokia's reputation for its technological quality,
What distinguished the Nokia Cityman from its competitors was design. Smaller and lighter than the Motorola 8000 series. In the 80s this style was a sign of seriousness and high technology.
In 1988, Nokia held 13.5% of the global cell phone market and 10% of the UK market. For a relatively unknown Finnish company, these results were astonishing.
