Beautiful Vintage Apple IIGSROM 3 Examine the images very carefully, this is the cleanest and mostattractive Apple IIGS that I have ever prepared and offered on eBay. Examine the case, the lid and the front panel. They match. NOT close, not almost, not maybe...they match. Look at any Apple IIGS and you will notice, that they three components were cast or injected at different times, and although Apple quality control was good, the color was always subtly&nb...sp;different, AND...over time, they invariably faded at different rates, producing tops and bottoms that now do not match. They are always different. Don't believe me, I challenge you to examine any Apple IIGS cases you may have, or see for sale on eBay closely, and see for yourself....they just don't match. Unlike so many old Apple II GS it is not an ugly and discolored fadedtan. This GS is a beautiful lustrous gray/platinum and does NOT have: engraving, metal tags, permanent writing, dings, dents, or deep scratches. In my opinion this Apple IIGS is as close to Excellent as theycome, but check out the many pictures and form your own opinion. Ask if you wish to see any additionalimages. The Apple IIGS (styledas IIgs), the fifth and most powerful of the AppleII family, is a 16-bit personal computer produced by AppleComputer, Inc. While featuring the Macintosh lookand feel, and resolution and color similar to the Commodore Amiga and AtariST, it remains compatible with earlier AppleII models. The "GS" in the name stands for"Graphics and Sound, " referring to its enhanced multimedia hardware, especially its state of the art audio.[1]The microcomputer is a radicaldeparture from any previous Apple II, with its 65C816 16-bitmicroprocessor, direct access to megabytes of RAM, and mouse. Itwas the first computer produced by Apple to use a color graphical user interface (colorwas introduced on the MacintoshII six months later) and AppleDesktop Bus interface for keyboards, mice, and other input devices. Itis the first personal computer to have a wavetable synthesis chip, utilizingtechnology from Ensoniq.In August 1989, Apple increasedthe standard amount of RAM shipped in the IIGS to 1.125 MB. This time theadditional memory was built-in on the motherboard, which required a layoutchange and allowed for other minor improvements as well. This update introducedboth a new motherboard and a new ROM firmware update; however, neither wasoffered to existing owners—even as an upgrade option (the new ROM, now twochips, is incompatible with the original single-socket motherboard). Apple hadcited the reason an upgrade was not being offered was that most of the featuresof the new machine could be obtained in existing machines by installing System5 and a fully populated Apple IIGS Memory Expansion Card.The new ROM firmware then took256 KB and contained the System 5.x toolsets. The newer toolsets increasedthe performance of the machine by up to 10%, due to the fact that less had tobe loaded from disk, tool ROM read access being faster than RAM, and theirhighly optimized routines compared to the older toolsets (pre-GS/OS-based). Inaddition to several bug fixes, also added were more programmer assistancecommands and features, a cleaned-up control panel with improved mouse controland RAM Disk functionality, more flexible Appletalk support and slot-mapping.In terms of hardware, the newmotherboard is a cleaner design that drew less power and resolved audio noiseissues that interfered with the Ensoniq synthesizer in the originalmotherboard. Over four times more RAM is built-in, with double the ROM size, and an enhanced ADB microcontroller provides native support for sticky keys, mouse emulation, and keyboard LED support (available on extended keyboards).Hardware shadowing of Text Page 2 was introduced, improving compatibility andperformance with the classic Apple II video mode. The clock battery is nowuser-serviceable, being placed in a removable socket, and a jumper location wasadded to lock out the text-based control panel (mainly useful in schoolenvironments). Support for the Apple-IIe-to-IIGS upgrade was removed, and somecost-cutting measures had some chips soldered in place rather than beingsocketed.
