Antique Mongolian Astrological Discs - Volvelles - Paper Calculators
Here is a set of Mongolian astrological volvelles, or paper calculators. Volvelles are paper discs, usually with multiple ones stacked and fixed, so that turning them can perform combinatoric calculations. In the photos some are presented assembled as they are fixed together (with string), other components are separated, so you may see the designs. These obscure and esoteric devices were often attached to the... pages of books, but they also could be stand-alone items, as is the case with these. Medieval Europe used volvelles as kinds of pocket computers as well. In terms of age, they date between the 18th to early 20th century. They were all acquired separately over time from Mongolian sources.
