This is a classic/vintage Leading Edge DC-2014 keyboard that was purchased from a university surplus about 30 years ago and has been kept in a storage box not exposed to light or dust/dirt for that time span. Has been cleaned - No dirt, dust or lint.It is estimated it had been in use for just 4 to 5 years before the university sold it as surplus. This model was introduced in 1985 to 1986 and I purchased it from the surplus in 1989/1990. Has not been used since then -... It has been in storage since then until now.
Very clean. Has been "retro-brightened". No damage or even signs of wear. Everything intact.
There is one "Before" picture (the last one) I took of the keyboard before cleaning and Retrobrightening. Took all keys off cleaned and retrobrighteded. Amazing difference. Achieved virtually "brand new" appearance.
Restoration: I carefully removed all of the keys, vacuumed thoroughly and cleaned all of the dust and lint that had accumulated under the keys, cleaned the surface under the keys with alcohol applied with Q-tips.Cleaned the keys and body of the keyboard with cloth with water and dish detergent (did not allow water into the electronics). Anything that did not come off with that I cleaned with alcohol. Anything that did not come off with alcohol, I lightly cleaned with acetone.
Since the plastic body and keys had yellowed so much, I then did a "Retrobright" treatment of the keys and keyboard itself. This is a method of brightening and de-yellowing computer plastic that has yellowed as a result of age and exposure to UV light. If you want to know how the retro-bright process works, look up "The 8-bit Guy" on YouTube and look for his videos on Retrobrightening. It works but requires some caution and attention to detail.
Tested: All keys work. 100% functional. Nothing is missing or broken. Key action is great.I hooked it up to a Leading Edge CPU with a word processing program and tried and verified every key - all work.
I went through all the number, letter and character keys, keying each one 20 times each to make sure that:That they were all working - they all did work, and To see if any key "chatter" occurred when typing numerous times. Chatter is when you type one time but the character is inputted two or three times.Result: All keys worked and there were no repeats (no key chatter) when testing each key 20 times.
Key action was good - very responsive and tactile. Has the classic clicky-mechanical sound and action.So this is a tested and working with no issues DC-2014.
