Early/mid 19th century unfinished linen and silk work sampler. Though undated, the style of stitch work would indicate this piece dates to c.1840 or slightly earlier. Worked by an anonymous hand, this sampler is completely charming with fine quality stitch work throughout. The upper and middle sections of the linen are stitched with rows of alphabet letters, numbers and border patterns whilst the lower section contains a central flower basket flanked by a tree. There is a flower basket... by the left side tree, the beginnings of another by the tree on the right, whilst the linen above these motifs is blank. The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age, slightly darker in places. The colours of the silks are good with some very slight bleeding to parts of the green stitch work. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when it was first stitched. As can also be seen from the photographs, there are a few small areas of damage to the field of the linen and another on the upper left edge which has resulted in a small amount of stitch loss.Measures 12" across x 13" ANY QUESTIONS, PLEASE ASK.
