Original Description:
Ferrite Core Memory Storage Cell ЯН-16 from NAIRI 3Overalldimension: 49 x 42 x 3 cmWeight:4, 2 kgManufacturedin 1976 CONDITION: used vintage conditionThe first Nairi computer was developed and launchedinto production in 1964, at the Yerevan Research Institute of MathematicalMachines (the city of Yerevan, the Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic). Chief Designer — Hrachya E. Hovsepyan. In1965, amodified version called Nairi-M, and in 1967 versions called Nairi-S andNairi-2, were ...developed. Nairi-3 and Nairi-3-1 the first third generationSoviet mainframe computers, which used integrated hybrid chips, were developedin 1970. These computers were used for a wide class of tasks in a variety ofareas, including engineering and the economy. In Nairi-3 themicroprogram principle of Nairi-1 control reached its highest development andwas brought to a qualitatively new level. In this case, it became possible tocompactly store large (up to 128 thousand micro-instructions) arrays ofmicroprograms with a simultaneous sharp reduction in the access time, and allthe necessary techniques of conventional programming were allowed to be used. Thanks to this, it was possible to provide a multilingual computer structure, amode of time sharing with simultaneous access of up to 64 terminals, each of whichcould perform the functions of a single computer. The performance of theNairi computer was unrivaled, given the fact that the computer firmware wasplaced in a permanent memory of the long-termstorage device with a samplingcycle of 8 μs in the Nairi computer, while in the remaining computers theprograms were stored in external storage devices such as a magnetic drum.Theprincipal feature of the proposed computer architecture was the use of apermanent, long-term cassette-type memory device used for two purposes:-organization of microprogram memory;-organization of memory for storing the built-in applied technological computerfirmware.Along-term storage device (ДЗУ – in Russian)is intended for permanent storage and delivery of information: microprograms, running programs, libraries of subprograms, etc. Long-term storage device is apart of the main computer cabinet. The main functional unit of the long-termstorage device is a storage, which consists of storage cells (Ячейка Накопителя ЯН – in Russian).Multi-windingpulse transformers on ferrocart cores are the elements for storing of binarydigits of numbers. Primary single-turn transformer windings serve to recordinformation. Secondary windings (50 turns) serve to read information. Recording"1" is carried out by permeating the primary (address) wire throughthe cores, writing "0" – bypassing the core.Yerevan plant “Electron” (the city of Yerevan), Kazan plant of computing machines “КЗЭВМ” (the city of Kazan) also produced Nairi computers.Questions are welcome if I missed anything in the description or additional information is needed.
