The grill on one speaker has some pick marks, but this probably can be repaired or new grill material appli...ed to the grillpanels.These speakers wereupdated by this seller in 2017, and they work perfectly. The surrounds were replaced with premium-qualityfoam products, and the woofers have a perfect acoustic seal and have maintainedtheir low resonance (approximately 45 Hz), extremely low for such a smallspeaker, and comparable to the original The Large Advent Loudspeaker in bassresponse and bass extension, which is to say that they are excellent in thisrespect and exceeded by no small speaker this size in termsof bass extension and low distortion. Theonly comparable speaker in this size range is the Acoustic Research AR-6, whichis superior with respect to low distortion, but not equal in terms of bass extension, to the Smaller Advent. These speakers are 4-ohm and relativelyinefficient, so good amplifier power with the capability of driving lowimpedances is important for best results. Bass response from these speakers will fool many an audiophile who mighthave thought that low bass was not possible from such a small-cabinet sealedspeaker, but The Smaller Advent easily dispels those thoughts.The tweeters usedon this speaker are identical to The Large Advent original speaker, which is tosay that they are excellent drivers throughout the midrange and treble, including excellent power-handling capability. Both tweeters operate perfectly in this pair. One tweeter has the red phenolic-plasticdiaphraphm and the other has a green cone; this is not at all unusual. Both are identical, and both operateflawlessly.Overall, this pairof The Smaller Advent Loudspeakers is a fantastic bargain in terms ofperformance quality in a loudspeaker for its size and original cost. This speaker, like the larger originalAdvent, was designed by Henry Kloss with the help of associates Hofman and Low(original friends of KIoss going back to 1955 at Acoustic Research and later, in 1957, at KLH Research and Development), and the principles of exchangingworking parameters of loudspeaker design were incorporated into the design ofthis clever little speaker. The woofercone has added mass (the ugly and thick-looking dust cap and a supply of hotglue around the edge) to lower the free-air resonance to the subsonic range toallow the system resonance of the speaker to drop down into the 45-Hertz range, comparable to the much-larger Large Advent. The crossover allows for slightly higher Q (lower damping at resonance)to allow the speaker to reach well into the low-bass range with output that canbe clearly felt as well as heard. Therefore, theoverall performance of this little speaker is literally unsurpassed amongspeakers in its size and price range; in fact, it is probably superior toanything in its size range in terms of overall sound quality andbandwidth. This speaker was a bargainthat few audiophiles realized existed!
