1960s IBM Computer Core Memory Plane - 8192 bitsYou are bidding on a core memory plane from the memory stack of an vintage computer - I believe it is from the memory stack of an IBM 360 mainframe computer. This memory plane was manufactured in the 1960s, and the computer was retired many years ago.The memory plane is an early model with relatively large ferrite cores.Memory planes like this one were initially "woven" by hand and later as cores became smaller, they were assembled by mac...hine.The wires are woven through the ferrite cores to form an "open net" - the array is not adhered to a PC board like those on some newer core memory planes. The memory plane is about 4.5 X 7 inches, and it has four sections of 64 X 32 ferrite cores for a total of 8192 bits. All images and scans are of the item in this auction. Some of you may remember the days before semiconductor memory, when core memory was "state-of-the-art".Half the switching current was sent through an "X" line and half through a "Y" line to switch or sense one ofthe bits in the plane. If a pulse was detected on the sense line, it meant that the core (bit) had switched state. This memory plane is intended for display only, and is not being sold as a working item.It would make an interesting conversation piece, or it could be used for instruction in old computer technology.
