For sale is a brand new NEC V20 microprocessor. This is a drop in upgrade for Intel 8088 processors in machines such as the original IBM PC, XT, and clones.
The NEC V20 is an interesting upgrade because it is able to provide a performance increase beyond the original Intel 8088 without upping the clock frequencies. Performance increases can be seen between 10-30%, depending on the application. This specific V20 will run fine at the stock 4.77MHz of the original IBM PCs and up t...o 8MHz in other or overclocked machines.
Installation is a breeze, simply open up your PC, find the original Intel 8088, remove it, and place the V20 in its place. No other configuration is required. The vast majority of software will run fine on the V20, however a small few pieces of software will be buggy or not work due to minute timing differences. I have not personally ran into any, but they do exist.
The benchmark screen pictures I have included highlight real performance differences between a V20 and the original 8088 in my IBM XT. I test each of these chips on a real IBM XT prior to sending them out.
Let me know if you have any questions!
