For Whom the Bell Tolls by Ernest Hemingway.Published by Charles Scribner's Sons, New York, in 1940.First edition, first printing, with the "A" printed on the copyright page and title page dated 1940. First-issue dust jacket with publisher's original $2.75 price on front flap and no photographer credit beneath author's photo on rear panel. Beige full-cloth hardcover with light-brown top edge and untrimmed fore edge. 471 pages. NEAR FINE book in VERY GOOD - dust ja...cket. Book is exceptionally bright, clean and unworn and is Fine except for a faint ring from a cup on the front board and just slight wear to the red title block on the spine. No sunning. No bumping or wear to the edges. Tight and square with strong, sound hinges, with no cracking. Spotless outer page edgee. Excellent interior but with some tanning to the endpapers and a faint diagonal crease at the bottom half of the lower corner of the front endpaper through the title page. Pages are otherwise flawless. No previous owner's signature or bookplate.
Dust jacket is very bright and very clean with practically no sunning. Large chips at the top and bottom spine ends extending slightly to the front panel with a loss of the word "For" at the top edge. Small chips at the corner tips. Moderate creasing with a few closed tears and tiny chips at the top and bottom edges of the front and rear panels. Otherwise structurally sound with no repairs and very little wear at the folds except for a small horizontal closed tear in the center of the front fore edge fold. Jacket is protected in an archival mylar cover.
