Howell was a closeted gay actor who tragical...ly committed suicide by a self inflicted gunshot wound in 1966 at the age of 53. He is best remembered for roles in films such as Pardon My Pups (1934), The Wrong Way Out (1938), Pride of the Bowery (1940) and Ball of Fire (1941), in which he played a college boy. He also played Jack Jones in the low-budget Jones Family films, beginning with Every Saturday Night (1936) and ending with On Their Own (1940).PROVENANCE
This photo was part of a large collection of vintage movie star autographs collected by a wealthy Beverly Hills family who were very much a part of high society during the 1920's - 1940's.
Headed by Francis Whitaker, whose wife was an occasional actress, the Whitaker family lived on Bedford Drive in Beverly Hills and had several friends in the movie business including Philo McCulloch, Donald McDonald, Hoot Gibson, William Morrissey, Midgie Miller, and Gertrude Childs Huntington.
Many of the inscribed photos in this collection are dedicated to Thomas Whitaker (1923-2009), the rich young son of the household, then a young teenager.
We are auctioning several other photos from this private collection as well as a fascinating day book from the year 1926 cataloging the doings of this millionaire family as they entertained Hollywood folks and motored around early Los Angeles.
