This vintage lapel pin was awarded by the U. S. Veterans Administration for 2500 hours of service with the Veterans Affairs Voluntary Service (VAVS). The age is not known, but the appearance is such that this pin most likely dates to no later than the early 1950s. The central design of this very attractive sterling silver pin is the logo/symbol for the Veterans Administration (now the U. S. Department of Veterans Affairs), with the date 1930 and the words VETERANS... ADMINISTRATION. It uses four colors of enamel (red, white, blue, black) and includes an American bald eagle with bright gilt body and wings. The letters VAVS are at the top, and 2500 HOURS is at the bottom. This item is hallmarked STERLING (mostly under the catch), but there is no mark for manufacturer. There is a hinged attachment pin with locking catch. This item measures approximately 18 x 19 mm (11/16 x 3/4").This item is in very good condition, with light wear, and it remains a good toned silver color (although appearing goldish in first photo!). The actual item is lighter in color and much brighter than is evident in the photos.
