Description: A very good copy of the 1880 early printing of Mark Twain's "Roughing It" fully illustrated by eminent artists of the time. Twain's brother Orion was appointed Secretary of the Nevada Territory. Twain tagged along in this rollicking account of their steamboat and stagecoach journey west along with the Twain's usual mixture of... tall tales and autobiographical sketches. Octavo (9" x 6") 591pp. plus the Appendix A - C . Issued in publishers full brown cloth with pictorial spine and cover in gilt and blind stamp. Gilt still bright to cover and spine. Corners are bumped and rubbed, some discoloration of cloth to front board, chipping to the cloth of the boards and spine and a 2" chip along the upper outer edge of the front board. Spine ends bumped and chipped and hinges are loose. Damp stain to the outer top and upper outer edge visible on the top of a few interior pages but doesn't come close to the text block. The two page frontis with tissue guard intact still in nice shape. Interior clean and unmarked with a vertical crease to the paper of the first few pages. A 3" stain along the upper gutter of page 483 again not interfering with the text block.
