Chinese Qing Dynasty (17th-18thCentury) Dark Brown Shiny Glaze Wide Mouth Twin Handled Jar
Classic dark brownshiny glaze barrel bodied, wide mouth jar with twin handles on two sides. Thebody is made of a higher fired tan/brown stoneware and wheel thrown. The bodyflares slightly out reaching a maximum diameter at the shoulder where thebottoms of the handles attach. The shoulder slopes inward and... then risesvertically with a long neck to the rim. Twin handles are on two sides attachingat the top to the rim. This jar has a wonderful shiny dark brown orange peeltexture, classic glaze used in the 17th and 18th centuryQing Dynasty. The base has a moderatelywide foot typically seen in the early Qing Dynasty. This is a very well pottedand expertly glazed example. Would have been used for storing pickled food orthick liquids such as sorghum. Vessels with the twin handles are more difficultto find and would have been used to run a rope through and then hung from theceiling.The vessel is inexcellent condition for being over 300 years old with no cracks or hairlines. Thevessel does show evidence of use with wear around the rim, on the foot andunder the handles where the rope hung. The rim and foot have smooth worn areasindicating a lot of use. Under 40X magnification the glaze surface is coveredin tiny use wear scratches concentrating around the finish, rim and widest partof the body.
