Washington and Lee University in Lexington Virginia's Collections of Art and History is currently running an exhibition "Breaking the Chains: Ceramics and the Abolition Movement." Amongst the items on display is an identical dish to this one. An identically printed plate also featured in a publication by The Chipstone Foundation "And Freedom To the Slave Anti slavery Ceramics 1787-1865"The shallow dish or plate is 9" (23cm) in diameter and is transfer printed with ...a central picture of a woman cradling her child. Around the edges are four religious and other couplets expressing anti-slavery sentiments. An identical plate was sold by Tennants auctioneers as "Staffordshire" whilst the plate in the Chipston article is referred to as French. It is made from very fine translucent porcelain rather than the earthenware normally associated with transfer printed wares of this type. For its age the piece is in very good condition. It has one tiny chip on the edge of the rim and a slightly larger one on the underside as shown clearly in the photos. Neither is visible on display. As always I am selling without reserve and at a low starting price to encourage early bidders. I start all my ales at below cost as there is no fun in an auction without any bids.I am also offering to ship this item anywhere worldwide for FREE. That's right, what you bid will be what you pay.Preferred payment method is by PAYPAL. As stated earlier, I offer a NO QUIBBLE money back guarantee and will refund you in full if you are in any way unhappy with this item.
