I think it works properly at detecting metals, etc. but the constant hum is pretty loud & we're not sure that's as it should be. My husband made a good repair to the white battery compartment with glue & zipties for added sturdiness- It's holding up firmly!. Unit uses 1...4 AA batteries- not included. Unit has a few scratches & is a bit soiled but looks pretty good overall for its age. Original box is included which is very worn & soiled. Sorry- no manual!
