This is a complete kit for professionally replacing a pair of surrounds on all AR Speakers that utilize the AR 12 inch woofer. This includes the AR-3, AR-3a, AR- 11, AR-10PI, AR-LST, AR 9, AR 91, AR 9LS, AR-58, AR-78LS, AR-58BXI, TSW-610B and TSW-910. This kit has been successfully utilized on every one of this models.
Note: original AR-3 woofers have a cloth surround which seldom needs replacement. However, if your cloth surround is damaged or your woofer was once ...replaced with a later foam surround woofer, you may use this surround as a replacement.Assembled from components selected while replacing the surrounds on many, many AR speaker drivers. This is not a generic surround replacement kit. The components and detailed instructions were selected explicitly for Acoustic Research speaker drivers. These may fit other speakers as well but we specialize in only AR and some limited number of Advent speakers. These surrounds have the correct roll and flexible foam. Do not use stiff foam or rubber surrounds. It will reduce your bass response substantially.The kit includes; a pair of foam surrounds, a set of shims for centering the voice coil (if you are going to go through the trouble of removing the woofer, go the extra measure and center the voice coil), a container of adhesive ( It is strong, fast drying and dries clear.), a pair of dust caps that you literally drop in place when done and a step-by-step set of instructions. For the early model speakers, such as the AR-3a, you may find the cabinet sealer in department OTHER SPEAKER SERVICE PARTS(don't try and reuse that old, dried up sealer that's there, a sealed cabinet is key to those low bass notes), If your foam cabinet gasket is suspect, replace it with our new foam gasket tape.
Note the AR 9 requires two kits to replace the surrounds on all 4 woofers. Also, we have introduced an AR 9 specific kit which will save you some cost providing all surrounds for the 4 woofers and 2 lower mid ranges. If you are restoring all surrounds, use the specific AR 9 kit.
Now would also be a good time to replace those troublesome level controls, on early models, with superior controls from VINTAGE-AR. These can be found in Department, LEVEL CONTROLS. You've removed the grille and woofer and are more than half the way there. If those controls haven't failed yet, they will shortly. This is a weak link in the early model AR speakers but then AR never dreamed of a 50 year+ life span. The original AR control knobs are a direct fit and may also be found in Dept., OTHER SPEAKER SERVICE PARTS. Just a quick message to let you know that I successfully completed refurbishing my friend's beloved AR3a's this past Saturday.
As we had both suspected, the surrounds were shot on both speakers, but more so on the one that I had mentioned was buzzing. The new surrounds cured the problem and we both want to say that the dust cap covers lend a classy finish to the woofer.
