Magnificent early 1920s evening gown with poppy flowers and poppy pods theme. It was so exciting to open the box and discover this glittering piece with its original necklace. The waistline of the dress is slightly dropped, the skirt is still rather long, so I think it was made in 1921 or 1922. The beadwork was made by hand.
There are three pieces: the dress, necklace and overskirt.The dress has a snap closure in front, behind a large sequined flower on the sash and then h...idden behind a beaded net panel. The beaded net panel on the back is hanging freely, attached at the shoulders only. It is finished with beaded fringe. The overskirt: it is embellished with large beaded flowers.It has tassels on the sides and is longer in front. it fastens on the side and should be tucked under the beaded sash.(Picture #5 shows the overskirt slightly below the beaded sash.)The bodice is made of a dense silk. It is slightly off-black (not brown, as my photo may show).The skirt and the net are made of Art Silk, an early version of rayon. Glossy and strong, Art Silk was created to hold heavy beadwork. (An 1900s dress in my collection is made of identical net. It holds dense cut iron beadwork perfectly well.)Condition: antique excellent.There are no underarm issues, no holes, no discoloration.
