Bairoko was named after the Battle of Bairoko, which occurred in Bairoko Harbor on the north coast of New Georgia, Solomon Islands during WWII.
When the Korean War broke out Bairoko was recommissioned and reported to the Pacific Fleet. This book captures the lives of the men as they traveled the Pacific from August 1950 to August 195...1. The Bairoko supported the United Nations Forces in Korea and her planes flew hundreds of strikes against North Korean and "Chinese Volunteer" troops. equipment and bases.
On 9 May 1951 the Bairoko had 5 men killed and 13 injured by an explosion off the Japanese coast, this book honors those men in the first few pages.
The book is in average shape for something that's 68 years of age. In the "Sports" section at the end of the book there are a few torn pages, besides the binding is a bit lose. However, for its age its in pretty remarkable condition.
