SURROUND FACTS
Surrounds are a critical element of speaker performance. The surround not only affects the bass parameters of a speaker it also absorbs and reflects various cone vibrations throughout the frequency spectrum. Further, the surround often determines the response of a speaker to peak signals. Serious speaker designers put much effort and science into the specific...s of each particular surround. The type of material, treatment, thickness profile, curvature, angle of attachment and the exact method of attachment all come into play. There are as many variations of surrounds as there are speaker brands and generally they are not interchangeable. That's why at Audiodog's you will only get parts that meet the specifications for your speaker and not something that merely fits.
This sale is for a set of 2 foam replacement surrounds for the 10" wood / masonite frame speaker found in the Original Large Advent models and the early Dahlquist DQ10 & DQ20 speakers with the Masonite ring. These American made surrounds are the correct density, weight & profile design so that your Advent and Dahlquist speakers will function as the manufacturer intended. Not all speaker foams are equal and getting the size right is only half the battle.
METAL FRAME verses WOOD FRAME: The surrounds for the metal frame and wood frame Advents will fit each other but that's where the similarity ends. The wood frame woofer has a longer throw (more Voice coil winds) and therefore requires more room to move so it has a larger roll and is installed with the roll facing inwards and attaches to the underside of the wood frame. The purpose of which is to allow a maximum distance of travel for the cone so the speaker can achieve the bass parameters it was designed for. The metal frame surround has a small outer lip designed to fit in the grove of the metal frame while the wood frame surround has a smaller inner lip. The design of these two surrounds is intentional and specific to each speaker type. Mismatching will result in an under-achieving speaker. (See photo detail )
