The Duchy of Brunswick followed in 1809: The skull was taken over by the Hussar Regiment No. 17 and the 92nd Infantry... Regiment. The Braunschweiger Totenkopf differs from the Prussian: the skull looks straight ahead and is positioned over the crossed bones.
Immediately after the end of the fighting in 1918, the skull appeared again - this time on the helmets and vehicles of some free corps. Not least because of this, the skull became not only a symbol of fighting and self-sacrifice, but also for militaristic traditionalism, anti-liberalism and anti-Bolshevism. Nationalist veterans wore skull and crossbones, cufflinks, and other privately crafted civilian jewelry.
