I AM LISTING MANY INTERESTING AND UNIQUE ANTIQUES THIS WEEK SO PLEASE CHECK MY OTHER AUCTIONS!!!! This listing is for a very rare pair of Elkington silver plate centerpiece garniture pieces. This is Victorian silver plate at it's finest. These pieces are unique as they were made for exhibit at the 1876 Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition. They are marked wi...th the usual markings for Elkington and the date letter "P" for 1876 as well as an additional large eagle mark for the 1876 Phila. Exhibition. I have seen hundreds maybe thousands of pieces of Elkington and have never seen this eagle mark nor can I find it online or in any of my books. Pieces measure about 12-1/4" long at their extremes; and 3-3/4" tall at the tip of the birds neck. I imagine these did nothing but hold a plant for garniture around a centerpiece or a punch bowl at a fancy table and was never meant to be a utilitarian piece but made for exhibition only. Pieces are extremely fine in their detail. Someone at sometime used something to scrub the pieces, probably the coarse side of a kitchen sponge, leaving very shallow scratches that should mostly buff out. This is fresh from a closet and shows normal wear and patina for an item of this vintage. Pics give an accurate portrayal of condition. See Pics. When shipped, I will be removing the glass for safety reasons. I TOOK LOTS OF PHOTOGRAPHS, BE SURE TO SCROLL ALL THE WAY DOWN TO THE END OF THE AUCTION TO SEE THEM ALL!!!!
