Small mid 19th century sampler by Elizabeth Arnold aged 7. Though undated, the style of stitch work would indicate this piece dates to c.1845 or slightly earlier. Worked in wool on soft gauze, this little sampler is completely charming with neat-ish stitch work throughout. The gauze is stitched with rows of alphabet letters, numbers and border patterns, finishing with Elizabeth's name and age running across the bottom edge. The gauze has overall discolouration consistent with its age, s...lightly darker down the centre and left side, and the colours of the thread are good with the odd stitch missing here and there. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Elizabeth first stitched it. Measures 10 1/4" across x 10" I AM ALSO SELLING A SAMPLER ACQUIRED AT THE SAME TIME AS ELIZABETH'S WHICH IS BY JANE ARNOLD. ALSO UNDATED BUT STITCHED AROUND THE SAME DATE AS ELIAZABETH'S, IT IS POSSIBLE THAT THE GIRLS WERE SISTERS. ANY QUESTIONS, PLEASE ASK. ALSO PLEASE CHECK OUT THE OTHER SAMPLERS I'M SELLING.
