Vintage 1970s Heathkit GD - 48 Induction Balance Metal Locator Detector For Repair
Item History & Price
Please Note - this metal locator/detector requires some repair for it to be used
The Heathkit metal locator/detector appears to work OK (it beeps and shows movement on the strength meter when passed over small metal objects) but requires some repair to the detector head, as the shaft end has broken out of the plastic housing. Also, the control unit plastic cover has some damage to the edges (see... photos). The included construction/operation manual is in very good condition.
The metal locator has a simple off-on-sensitivity rotary control, signal strength meter, built-in speaker and 1/4" jack headphone socket. The shaft is adjustable in length to allow for different user heights and has a swivel joint to allow the head to be adjusted flat to the ground.
The metal locator is uses a NEDA No.1602 9 volt battery - which is US equivalent of the UK PP6/TR6/Eveready246 9 volt battery. PP6 batteries are still available on-line. It has the same snap connectors as the smaller, more common PP3 9 volt battery (which was used to test the metal locator).
The Heathkit metal locator was purchased as a kit in the early 1970's by my father. He built and used the locator over a number of years in the early days of hobby metal detecting.
