Here we have an superb & rare vintage briar estate pipe in the straight 'apple' shape, crafted by master British pipe-maker James Upshall. ...This pipe was hand made at Upshall's workshop in Tilshead, Wiltshire.
This high-grade "B" example has a wonderful straight grain around the bowl, with little birdseyeson the base of the shank.
Please note that the pipe has been very heavily smoked - the lower wall of the bowl has thinned, and thereis a visible burn on the underside of the bowl (see photo 10).The chamber would probably require the use of a gauze or similar to protect it from burning through.
Aesthetically, the pipe is in very good condition - just a small burn on the bowl rim, and some light discolourationto the stem.
There is a good layer of carbon in the chamber, and a little on the bowl rim.The stem fixes securely to the shank, and air flows through the pipe freely.
On one side of the shank is "James Upshall" and grade letter "B", with "Tilshead England" and"Made by Hand" on the other side.The circled "JU" logo adorns the stem.
Thoroughly cleaned.Sold as seen.
