Plasticshave been around since Victorian times ~ being made to emulate themore expensive Whitby Jet used for making mourning jewellery. Someplastic jewellery can fetch thousands and have become a specialistarea of Collecting. It is a very versatile material and fun toexplore its many looks through the ages so hope you enjoy my littlesale on this theme.
Nocelebration of plastic would be complete without... a piece from JakobBengel, a locksmith who established his company in 1873 inIdar-Oberstein originally manufacturing pocket watch chains. Duringthe Bauhaus and Art Deco period he was inspired by French Avant Gardeand trend setters such as Coco Chanel and he sharted to produceexperimental jewellery. Between 1924 and 1939 he produced piecesusing chrome, brass and coloured galilith and glass.
Thispiece is in the Modernist style with dusky red galalith beads flankedby chrome caps and chain linked to pierced chrome spheres. Galalith as far as i know is the Plastic produced in France and is very similar to Bakelite. JakobBengel did not sign his pieces but you can see similar fittings inSheryl's Art Deco Emporium online.
Thenecklace is 16.25 inches long. The cap/bead sections are app 19 mmlong. The chrome caps have a deeper patina than the spheres and some of the galalith beads need cleaning. i have cleaned a few of them and am happy to share my information with the purchaser. There is no damage that I can see.

We do accept returns for anything that we have not described correctly but in the case of change of mind we will not be able to refund the initial postage cost. A bit about me : i worked for many years in the Antiques Trade specialising first in antique clothing and Textiles and then i specialised in Art Deco and Art Nouveau, generally glass and sculpture and metal ware. i stood at many of the top fairs eg Olympia, Claridges, The Dorchester, The NEC and bought and sold in Sothebys, Christies and Bonhams. i appeared on TV a few times as an Expert, served on Vetting Committees and so on. i gave up the Material World for a number of years whilst i concentrated on Meditation, Healing and other Spiritual endeavours but am now selling on Ebay to pay the rent :-) i really do love the pieces that pass through my hands and i enjoy 'meeting' people across the globe and feel good making them feel good. i try to follow the Reiki precepts ~ one of which is 'To earn an honest living'.
