EARLY 19TH C AMERICAN ANTIQUE CARVED BLACK POWDER HORN, W/NAILED HEEL/HEMP CORD
Item History & Price
DIMENSIONS: 8 ½" Length x 2" base Diameter x ½" top rim
DESCRIPTION: This early & very nice early to mid-19th century black powder horn was just discovered in southern New Hampshire in the barn of a local estate. It remains untouched and is being offered in exactl...y the same condition it was found in. It hasn't been dusted, rinsed or otherwise disturbed. The home is an early center chimney colonial cape and nearly everything in the home and especially in the outlying buildings and barn behind the early post and beam constructed home, was early. This wonderful black powder horn was fashioned from a bull's horn and has a nailed heel and carved end, from which the user would have quickly pulled out the most likely cork plug with his teeth, as he held his rifle with one hand and muzzle-loaded the black powder in the gun with the other. The horn isn't signed and doesn't have carved sidewalls. But it still has an undisturbed great early look and was most likely made between 1845-1865. These were used to principally hunt and very similar black powder horns were used in the US Civil War of the same period by both the Confederate and Union armies. These items were omnipresent objects in early to mid-19th century America and you simply couldn't venture out into the untamed forest without one filled with black powder, a bag of lead balls and your rifle. of course, a knife would have helped you survive, knowing that bears, wolves, coyotes and mountain lions would have made you easy prey if you didn't have the means to defend yourself. The horn is without splits, stains, loss, abrasions, deformities or other significant damage. The wear it shows is commensurate with its antique pedigree and with its age. If it could only talk, you probably wouldn't believe the stories it could tell. Amazing condition and a wonderful 19th century early American cultural artifact. Wonderful.
CONDITION:Good to Very Good overall antique condition.
