0956A / 44174 EDWARD WADMORE CAP. HOLD H.M.S. PALLAS ENGRAVED RNLSGC with the enigmatic "M" on the reverse (1865-1879).
Edward Wadmore born February 19, 1842 in Colden Common near Twyford, Winchester, Hamps??(Hope that...'s right as its hard to make out on CS). His parents were William and Sarah and the 1851 Census shows he shared his household with his parents and his siblings, Cecily, Fanny, and Jane thus the only son.
He signs on as Boy 1st CL on HMS Britannia on July 09, 1860 and extended for 10 years on July 09, 1870 when he was Captain of the Hold aboard HMS Warrior. His trade was that of a laborer and stood 5'4, swarthy complexion with brown hair and hazel eyes.
He must have been quite the sailor as he was able to rise from Boy to Capt of Hold in a little less than 8 years. His CS and SR shows that he sailed aboard the following ships and that his character through out his service was VG:
HMS Britannia from 1860 till 1862
HMS Forte from 1862 till 1864
HMS Victoria from 1864 till 1867
HMS Warrior from 1867 till 1870
HMS Lord Warden from 1870-1870
HMS Duke of Wellington 1870-1871
HMS Pallas from 1871 till 1875 During which time he obtained his LS on 6 Aug 1875.
Duke of Wellington from 1875 till Shore pensioned Whitehall 11 July 1880
He appears in the 1871 Census as Head of household with his wife, Georgina in Kingston St Mary and Portsea. He has two sons Edward G and William. By 1881 his family has grown to Celina, Florence and Albert with his residence located at Swan Cottage Malins Rd.
