RARE 1872 CALIFORNIA GOLD 1/2 INDIAN HEAD FRACTIONAL PIONEER SOUVENIR TOKEN COIN
Up for auction is a 1872 Indian Head "California Gold" type souvenir token/coin. The obverse reads "1872" with an Indian Head and reverse reads "1/2" inside a wreath and "CALIF GOLD". Weight ~.3gSize ~ .5"Gold Content ~ UnknownCalifornia Gold tokens were made during the California Gold Rush before California became a state and was used as currency until it became one, all the way through ...the modern day (more so in the early 1900's-1970's) and was sold as souvenirs and given away at special events. The old type tokens were anywhere from 10-22K gold and the more modern ones were usually 10-14K gold all the way to gold plated brass. This appears to be the more modern type. A lot of information can be found on-line regarding California Gold token types from the old type 22K Gold old type all the way though the more modern Souvenirs and are all VERY COLLECTABLE and in demand!
