Hawkinsville& Florida Southern Railway Company, Pine Belt Route. Stockissued, however, no date is shown – known dates of issue were1896-1908). Incorporated in the State of Georgia. Embossed companyseal lower left. Certificate No. 40 was issued to H. W. Miller forone share of capital stock ($100 per share). Original ink signaturesof company vice president H. W. Miller and secretary C. D. Mackay.Certificate is about 7” x 11.5”. Beautiful, unique vignette with train passing... through forest with loggers working.Rare, unique certificate in VF+ Condition – Cox states usually undated onfront with value of $300.

Company's Early History:TheHawkinsville& Florida Southern Railway, “PineBelt Route”wasorganized around 1889 as a logging line in the pine forests south ofHawkinsville, Georgia (Pulaski County - Central Georgia). By 1895 it was also haulinggeneral freight, along with passengers on freight trains. After acharter was received in 1896, the Hawkinsville& Florida Southern transitionedto a 43-mile common carrier running south from Hawkinsville to theGeorgia Southern & Florida Railroad at Worth, Georgia (WorthCounty), about three miles north of Ashburn. The company alsoconstructed a 15-mile branch line from Davisville to Fitzgerald. Therailroad was leased to the Gulf Line Railway (Ashburn-to-Bridgeboro)in 1907. In 1909, the Hawkinsville& Florida Southern andthe Gulf Line Railway merged, although both companies kept their ownnames. After a reorganization in 1913, the Hawkinsville& Florida Southern emergedas the operator of a line from Hawkinsville to Camilla, havingabsorbed the Gulf Line Railway (which had extended the line toCamilla). In 1917, the Hawkinsville& Florida Southern reportedowning 93 miles of line consisting of 43 miles from Hawkinsville toWorth and 50 miles from Ashburn to Camilla. Trackage rights consistedof 3 miles from Worth to Ashburn on the Georgia Southern &Florida Railroad. The Georgia Southern & Florida controlled theHawkinsville& Florida Southern throughstock ownership. (The Georgia Southern & Florida in turn wascontrolled by Southern Railway.) In 1922, the Hawkinsville& Florida Southern enteredreceivership and was ordered to be sold. The southern end of the linefrom Camilla to Ashburn was purchased by the new Georgia, Ashburn, Sylvester, and Camilla Railway, but because no buyers had been foundfor the tracks between Hawkinsville and Worth, these were abandonedin 1923. The branch line to Fitzgerald was abandoned some timeearlier.
