VERY RARE SECOND WORLD ROVER SCOUT MOOT " STOCKHOLM 1935 " - PARTICIPANT WOGGLE
Item History & Price
Reference Number: Avaluer:8219537 | Composition: White Metal |
Period: 1930's | Description: Commemorative Scarf Ring (Woggle) |
From an estate clearance this is a very rare and collectable base metal commemorative scarf loop or 'woggle' from that historic second event, as pictured.Early Scouts tied a knot in their neckerchief (scarf) to fasten it around the neck. Over time a purpose made fastening ring or '"woggle" was adopted by the Scout movement
The earliest known reference to a woggle is the June 1923 edition of The Scout. The term was quickly applied to other designs of fastener, of many shapes and sizes, and is today used around the world. The word ring was used in editions of the Scouting handbook Scouting for Boys until 1929 when Baden-Powell changed it in the 14th edition:
"It [the scarf] may be fastened at the throat by a knot or woggle, which is some form of ring made of cord, metal or bone, or anything you like" he wrote. This delightful white metal (not silver) woggle stands 1" tall and weighs 5.7 grams. The ring at the rear is very slightly misshapen but there is no serious damage to report as far as I can tell. This very scarce and desirable item is being offered here in a used but good, uncleaned vintage condition, exactly as pictured and with no reserve. Sorry but there is no Buy It Now price available.Items are always shipped via Royal Mail using a tracked and / or signed for service so do please check the costs of this to your location on the postage tab before bidding.
