Garrard Boxed Vintage Sterling Silver, Guilloche Enamel Dressing Table Set
Item History & Price
This stunning set is sterling silver-mounted, and backed with creamy-white guilloche enamel with a beautiful design of pink, lilac and yellow freesia flowers. It consists of a hand mirror, a comb, a hairbrush and a clothes brush. It comes with its original blue hard-case box, which is lined with cream-coloured silk and blue velvet, and is marked 'By appointment to H.M. The Queen. Goldsmiths & Crown Je...wellers Garrard & Co Ltd, 112 Regent Street, W.1'.
Garrard & Co. are the longest serving jeweller's in the world, beginning in 1735, with the first royal commission received from Frederick, Prince of Wales. Garrard & Co. were appointed the first official Crown Jeweller in 1843, and have created many pieces for the British royal family, including the Duchess of Cambridge’s sapphire cluster engagement ring. They are also noted for their fine silverware, producing the America's cup in 1848, and the English Premier League trophy. They also produced the original prop of the Heart of the Ocean jewel, for the film Titanic.
The box measures 31 cm wide x 23.5 cm high x 6.5 cm deep and is in excellent used condition with one small patch of discolouration at the top, and some age-spotting on the silk lining. The mirror measures 27.5 cm long and 13 cm wide; the comb measures 19.6 cm long and 4.3 cm wide; the hairbrush measures 24 cm long, 4 cm deep and 7 cm wide, and the clothes brush measures 13.5 cm long, 3.8 cm deep and 4 cm wide. Each piece is fully hallmarked (maker's mark G&Co Ld, Anchor for the Birmingham Assay Office, Lion rampant for Sterling Silver, and date letter M for 1961), each also bears the stamp 'Garrard & Co. Ltd, 112 Regent St W'.
All of the pieces are in excellent used condition; the enamel appears undamaged on all pieces, and the silver is in really good condition with only slight tarnishing. The only wear that I can see is to the clothes brush (which is missing a number of bristles on the end row to either side); the mirror, comb and hairbrush also display slight traces of powder. I have given all pieces a gentle wipe and polish, but would suggest professional cleaning if a pristine finish is required.
A wonderful and rare set - super condition and so beautiful! It would be the perfect addition to a smart vintage dressing table, or would make a fabulous gift!
