Raymond Desvarreux, 1876 – 1961, a French Painter was the son of James Desvarreux-Larpenteur, an American painter. Like his father he painted landscapes, horses and hunting scenes, however, became well known for his military paintings, exhibiting at the Salon de Paris. He was a member of the Society of Military Painters in 1913. Under the direction of Louis Dumoulin, he participated in the panorama of the Battle of Waterloo and was awarded a gold medal at the Salon in 1913. He was approved by the Army Museum in 1914 and appointed painter of the Ministry of War in February 1915.
This picture is a rarity as while Desvarreaux painted many Napoleonic scenes and some of the Emperor Napoleon himself, this is the only painting I have been able to find of a named officer in Napoleons army. It may have been a commission for the Dubuard family. The picture is signed and dated 1902 when Desvarreaux was at his peak and had a fashionable salon in Paris which was listed in tour guides of Europe for wealthy Americans of the time as the place to visit for 'quality military paintings'
The painting as can be seen is surrounded by a magnificent ornate original frame. It is heavy and will require special packing and shipping. I will therefore not be offering an automated shipping option as buyers may well want to make their own arrangements for shipping with a specialist or want to discuss shipping options with me afterwards.
