Since the inception of the Jimmy V Celebrity Golf Classic, thousands of volunteers, sponsors and celebrities contributed their time and resources to help raise more than $13.5 million for cancer research. Nick Valvano, president emeritus of The V Foundation, and Pam Valvano Strasser, chairwoman of The V Foundation, will remain active and committed to the work of the foundation in the Triangle with new events like "Rock ‘n’ Roll Raleigh Marathon" and established events like "Racquets for Research."“The Jimmy V Celebrity Golf Classic generated tremendous funding and exposure for The V Foundation. Moving forward, we are strategically developing new platforms that allow us to engage an even more diverse group of supporters and partners, ” Valvano said. “We will forever be grateful for the work and dedication of Golf Classic Executive Director Frank McCann, the board of directors and thousands of Golf Classic volunteers who have been tirelessly devoted to finding a cure for cancer. I know Jim would have been proud of all they accomplished over the past 20 years.”The golf classic had grown in popularity. Nearly 500, 000 spectators came out over the years to help raise awareness in the fight against cancer. Celebrities and athletes including Michael Jordan, Darius Rucker, Mia Hamm, Charles Barkley, Kevin Costner, Paul DiMeo, Stuart Scott, Gale Sayers and Arnold Palmercontributed their time and talents to help raise millions of dollars with the goal of ending cancer.
The V Foundation’s announcement coincides with the foundation’s focus on new signature events in the Triangle, beginning with the Rock ‘n’ Roll Raleigh Marathon on April 13, 2014. The V Foundation will be represented by a group of Rock ‘n’ Roll Raleigh Marathon participants, called Team V, training for and running in the full and half marathon. The V Foundation also plans to strengthen support for the ninth annual Racquets for Research event in September of 2014.
