John Pollard entered France and Flanders with the 2nd battalion York and Lancaster Regiment on 9 September 1914, being entitled to a 1914 Star. John then survived the whole war and was transferred at some point to the 39th battalion Northumberland Fusiliers, this is confirmed on the Medal Index Card. The 39th battalion were detailed with battlefield clearance and only existed as a battalion from 10 May 1919 to 5 March 1920,... less than a year. During this period they lost 13 men, this would have been hazardous work assumed to have involved dealing with unexlpoded ordnance. John is one of only the 13 casualties, dieing on 4 November 1919 and being buried at Terlincthun, Wimille, France. John had been born at Farnhill, Yorkshire.
John in very comprehensively researched on the following excellent website: http://www.cpgw.org.uk/soldier-records/john-pollard/
