A very nice Chinese porcelain incense burner in shape of a fu dog. I bought this in 1970's at an antique shop in Wickford, RI. It is hand painted in the susancai style which was popular during the Kangxi emperor's reign. It has a fitted carved wooden base with four slots for the feet that came with it. I believe the base is origi...nal even though it has an odd fit. The figure is unmarked, just a remnant of an old tag on lid that reads "made in China". This was made sometime in 20th century, my guess is mid-century or perhaps a bit earlier.
It is in good condition with a repair to one ear and a chip on inside rim, there is stress a line on inside lid that doesn't appear to go through. The repair to ear seems to be made of paper mache or some sort of light material. It could be redone fairly easily but is not very noticable. The porcelain is a very thick and extremely heavy for its size, as heavy as a doorstop. I think the porcelain was made extra thick like an hibachi so you could burn the incense in it without it cracking from the heat. The figure alone measures 8-1/2" inches long and 6-1/4" inches high by approximately 5" inches wide. The wooden base measures 8" by 5" and is 2" inches high.
