From the DJ: "Life in the rare book business can... be filled with excitement and surprise, as described by David Magee, San Francisco antiquarian bookseller, in this witty and highly civilized account of some of his adventures here and abroad. With lively humor and sophistication, Mr. Magee entertains and enlightens as he tells amusing and suspenseful anecdotes about the people he has encountered, the places he has visited, and the events he has attended in the course of nearly a half century in the rare book trade. Infinite Riches, which also touches upon the worlds of music, theater and art, is good reading for all who savor a surprise ending to a difficult negotiation, the excitement of a rare find, inside knowledge of a "foolproof" forgery, or simply an elegant bargain. The author's vignettes of the many and varied clients, confreres, dear friends and strangers with whom he has dealt are a charming pageant of human beings—sometimes eccentric, amusing or moving-always vivid to the reader."
According to Wikipedia: "Lawrence Clark Powell (September 3, 1906–March 14, 2001) was a librarian, literary critic, bibliographer and author of more than 100 books.[1] Powell "made a significant contribution to the literature of the library profession, but he also writes for the book-minded public. His interests are reflected in the subjects that recur throughout his writings; these are history and travel, especially concerning the American Southwest, rare books, libraries and librarianship, the book trade, and book collecting..."
