From an Estate Sale of 19th century CRYSTAL & CHINA, we offer from the LUDWIG MOSER CRYSTAL MANUFACTORY in KARLSBAD, AUSTRIA(now, Karlovy Vary in Bohemia, Czechoslovakia) a FANTASTIC FIND of a MOUTH BLOWN HAND DECORATED SIGNED SET of a 2 5/8" high by 2 3/8" diameter at top(tapering down t...o 1 5/8") FOOTED DEMITASSE CUP and a 4 1/4" diameter FOOTED DEMITASSE SAUCER in a STUNNING EMERALD GREEN WITH CHARTREUSE TINT COLOR. With a GORGEOUS DESIGN of ORANGE/TAN GLOSSY RAISED ENAMELED SCROLLWORK, LEAVES, BUDS & FLOWERS(floral ends of vine with satin enamel inside) and HEAVY 24KT GOLD OVERLAY/BANDS around HANDLE and RIMS/EDGES. Design specific to cup: enameled design runs across the middle; entire handle covered in gold; gold bands around foot, CUP with HEAVY GOLD OVERLAY on HANDLE, GOLD BANDS around FOOT and outside of top edge, INSIDE OF TOP EDGE; and, top of top rim. Design specific to saucer: enameled design runs beteen outside edge and start of cup indent ON TOP SURFACE; GOLD BAND around outside edge of TOP SURFACE; and, GOLD BALL and TWO CONCENTRIC CIRCLES going around the middle of cup ring ON TOP SURFACE. Bottom of cup with GROUND FLAT and SMOOTH FOOT and INDENTED PONTIL MARK - marked in gold with Moser Form and Decoration numbers.Bottom of saucer with large ground flat and smooth pontil mark - MARKED WITH ENGRAVED "MOSER" SIGNATURE(shown in both Moser books referenced below), WHICH DATES THIS SET TO 1880-1895.CONDITION: EXCELLENT and, OTHER THAN A TINY CHIP ON THE OUTSIDE RIM OF THE SAUCER(SEE LAST PHOTO), are without any cracks, chips, nicks or stains. SINCE THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO WEAR TO THE ENAMELED DESIGN ON THE TOP OF THE SAUCER AND NO DISCERNIBLE WEAR TO THE GOLD ON THE CUP HANDLE WHERE GRASPED FOR USE, IT CAN BE CONCLUDED THAT THIS SET WAS ONLY DISPLAYED AND NEVER USED. ENAMELED DESIGN IS 100% INTACT ON CUP & SAUCER.ON AN OVERALL BASIS, THE GOLD OVERLAY ON CUP IS 90-95% INTACT WITH ONLY A TEENY BIT OF AGE RELATED WEAR TO HANDLE, FOOT AND OUTSIDE & INSIDE BANDS AT TOP - HOWEVER, THE TOP PART OF THE TOP RIM(ESPECIALLY AT THE POINT WHERE IT MEETS THE OUTSIDE VERTICAL SIDE) DOES SHOW SOME AGE RELATED WEAR, IN THAT THERE ARE A COUPLE SMALL AREAS OF GOLD "THINNING" AND TINY SPOTS OF GOLD LOSS.ON AN OVERALL BASIS, THE GOLD OVERLAY ON SAUCER IS 90-95% INTACT WITH ONLY A COUPLE TINY SPOTS OF AGE RELATED GOLD LOSS TO THE BAND ON OUTER EDGE OF TOP SURFACE AND A LITTLE GOLD "THINNING"/LOSS TO THE GOLD BALL AND THE TWO CONCENTRIC CIRCLES IN THE MIDDLE OF THE CUP INDENT. OBSERVATION ON DECORATION: not sure but I believe this might be the first time that I have run across an enameled and gilded design on crystal where the decoration was applied to the inner surface of the cup and the top surface of the saucer, and as such, would come in contact with drink/food and could flake off while consuming. THE REASON FOR THIS DECORATING APPROACH WAS PERPLEXING AT FIRST, HOWEVER, IF ONE PONDERS IT, THE SIMPLE ANSWER IS THAT THESE PIECES WERE MADE FOR DECORATION ONLY AND NOT TO BE USED FOR FOOD/DRINK, MUCH AS HANDPAINTED PORCELAIN PLATES WERE ONLY USED AS "CABINET PLATES". EVEN THOUGH THIS SET HAS A BIT OF AGE RELATED GOLD WEAR AND A TINY CHIP ON THE OUTSIDE EDGE OF THE TOP RIM ON SAUCER, IT DISPLAYS BEAUTIFULLY. PROVENANCE: saucer is marked with engraved Moser signature. PRICING GUIDELINES: 19th CENTURY SIGNED MOSER CUPS AND SAUCERS ARE EXTREMELY DIFFICULT TO FIND: in checking 13 years of sales, we found that only seven out of the sixty five same size Moser attributed gold&enameled cup&saucer sets had Moser signatures, with the latest set sold in Feb. 2019 having substantial gold loss/wear, for a price of $175.
