JohnStanton Fleming Morrison DFC (17 April 1892 – 28 January 1961) was a Britishgolf course architect. Blessed with a large frame and iron construction, Henry Longhurstdescribed him as massive, fit and fearless. After leaving Cambridge University he became acourse designer and wrote golf articles on a regular basis. As a member ofSunningdale he became involved with Harr...y Shapland Colt in 1922, when Colt wasdesigning and constructing the new course. He joined the partnership in 1923and in 1928 was appointed a Director of the newly formed company of Colt, Alison and Morrison Limited. During his career, which spanned some 38 years, hedesigned or remodelled many courses in the United Kingdom and Europe either individuallyor assisting Colt. They included Chantaco St Jean de Luz in France. HamburgFalkenstein, Frankfurter, Hamburger Land & G.C. in Germany. Stockholm inSweden and La Betulle GC (at Biella) & La Mandria GC (at Torino) in Italy. Inthe United Kingdom, his courses included Prestbury, Mayland (Essex), St Mellon(South Wales), Truro and Princes 27 holes along with Sir Guy Campbell. In 1945Colt retired. In 1947 Alison left for South Africa, leaving Morrison to run theBritish end. In 1952 he becomes the Managing Director after Colt died in 1951and Alison in 1952. He continued until 1961 when his own death brought an end tothe firm. His best-known book was ‘Around Golf.’ Published in 1939, it includedcontributions by Bernard Darwin, Cyril Tolley and Henry Longhurst among others..
