The Focke-Wulf Ta 152 - Thomas H. Hitchcock - Monogram Monarch / Eagle Editions
Incredible book! The third in the Monogram Monarch series (the previous two being the equally highly regarded books on the Ar 234 and Do335, both now OOP and hard to find) - Jerry Crandall's Eagle Editions imprint has now taken over Monogram, and this is therefore Monarch No.3
Like similar books from Eagle Editions, Classic Publications etc, this title has all the hallmarks of a very high quality book - immaculate research, fantastic photos and profiles - it's a real labour of love and something that all Luftwaffe fans will covet, and should own.
There are numerous glowing reviews on the net - here's one from an Amazon customer (2010) who gives the book 5 out of 5 stars: the words are NOT my own and are used for descriptive purposes only
During 2005 I received a flyer from Monogram Aviation Publications offering a special prepublication price for Monogram Monarch 4: Focke-Wulf Ta 152 by Thomas H. Hitchcock, "due for publication later this year." Having waited a year to get Monarch 2: Dornier Do 335, I decided against pre-ordering this time around. A wise decision as it turned out.
The title became something of a joke in the next few years. Every six months the Monogram website would offer a special prepublication price and promise the book would be published within six months. The title was changed to become Monarch 3, the intended book featuring the Ju 388 apparently being abandoned. People, especially those who pre-ordered, despaired of ever seeing it. Finally, in late 2008 it was announced that Monogram Aviation Publications had been sold to Eagle Editions and that every effort would be made to get this tile into print. I am happy to report that the final product is outstanding. Not having invested any money up front I think it was well worth the wait. Those who pre-ordered might have a different view.
Whatever the cause of the delay it does not seem to have affected the contents of the book in the slightest. The 2005 flyer describes the book almost exactly. The book describes the story of the Ta 152 in five chapters, each covering a year between 1941 and 1945. Each chapter covers not only the Ta 152 developments but the efforts of the competing Messerschmitt company and the larger context of the war itself. Since engines played such a large roll in the Ta 152 story the various Daimler-Benz, Jumo, and BMW engines are detailed in text and pictures. The various intended weapons get detailed treatment as well. modellers will be pleased with the camouflage and markings information.
The largely chronological presentation is very well done. Previous works on the Ta 152 left me with the impression that the Ta 153 was an unsuccessful spin-off of the Ta 152. Not so; the Ta 153 was the predecessor of the Ta 152. One also gets a wonderful "horse race" of sorts as the various Focke-Wulf types (Fw 190D, Ta 153, Ta 152) square off against their Messerschmitt counterparts (Bf 109H, Me 309, Me 209). The comments on the Bf 109H were especially interesting to me. I am something of a Bf 109H skeptic. Surely there would be photographic evidence of the Bf 109H if it was built in the numbers claimed and served however briefly under whatever limitations? The lovely Gareth Hector cover painting and his few interior paintings are of almost photographic realism. There is also a verycomprehensive index.
The are a few rough spots. The three view drawings on pages 40, 64, 66, and 68 suffer from lines dropping out. Nothing horrible, but quite noticeable. They seem to be scans several generations removed from the originals. It is a pity new ones could not be commissioned or the old ones cleaned up. The 2 page spread drawing by Arthur Bentley is also reproduced somewhat poorly and suffers from guttering. Sometimes the translation (presumably) from the German can be incomprehensible - "While operating at low altitude, the superchargers, operated by hydraulic coupling, but for high altitude operation, the exhaust-driven turbo with intercooler and aftercooler was mechanically driven." Say what!? And a few more maps would have been very welcome.
It should also be pointed out that this book, while consistent in size with the two previous Monarch volumes, do not share the same trade dress. The only concession is the yellow rectangle with a black 3Prices vary widely on this book. Please shop around for your best deal. I wouldn't put off a purchase for too long though. This book shows all the signs of one that goes out of print quickly.All in all, very highly recommended. If you liked the previous two books in the Monarch series you'll like this one also. Author Hitchcock can not be a young man judging by the bio in the book. I hope that having given up publishing his own books that he can now find the time to produce those long hinted at Bf 109 titles.
