Despite his turbulent life, Van Gogh pursued throughouthis career a clear artistic goal: to create images of great emotional intensitybased on a careful study of the effects of color and composition. Each paintingprovides a direct sense of how the artist viewed each scene, interpretedthrough his eyes, mind, and heart. Van Gogh strove to be a painter of rurallife and nature, he was enchanted by the Dutch countryside, the landscape andlight of the surroundings. His paintings include harvests, wheat fields andgeneral rural landmarks from the area and traditional rural life scenes. Insuch works he uses a palette of drab earth colors far removed from the vibrantcontrasting pigments of his later radical paintings. He wrote to his brother about a ‘woman … seenin the field’, ‘I have been watching those peasant figures for more than a yearand a half’, he added, ‘just to catch their character’. The artist was convinced that he got ‘betterresults by painting them in their natural environment’. Vigorously brushed andsoberly colored, they truthfully capture the atmosphere around them and depictthe rural life through the artists eyes.Condition: as pictured, aging. Dimensions approx.: 27.3 x 20.1 cm. The painting has a reference numbermarked on verso and stamp, which in our opinion belong to the previouscollections this artwork was part of. Aging of the paper.
