Vintage "Breeden's Hearse Hardware" advertising sign. HEAVY cast bronze with chrome plated finish. I'm not sure of the exact age but cast bronze construction would indicate it could be as early as the 1930s.If you aren't aware, signs of this design with the two metal studs at the bottom were made for use in funeral coaches and ambulances. They could be mounted for view behind the windshield, rear window or side windows. Many were custom ordered with the name of the funera...l home. As Breeden was a manufacturer of these signs I believe that this particular piece was intended as a sort of "salesman's sample" to show off their work to would be customers or at trade shows. As such it could well be the only surviving example of it's kind.In addition to signs Breeden also produced a wide variety of cast hearse hardware and decorative items such as landau bars, wreaths, bier pins etc.The sign weighs 5lbs unpacked. That's heavy for a hearse plaque! It measures 21.25'' wide and 4 5/8'' tall not including the steel studs. The center to center distance between studs is 10.75''There is some flaking to the black background paint and minor oxidation to the chrome. I chose not to clean it or mess with it, but some metal polish or #0000 steel wool would likely remove most or all of the patina to the chrome.CLICK HERE TO SEE MY OTHER AUCTIONS.
