This week I'm offering a number of old non-sport cards from various vintage sets. Dixie Ice Cream had one of the longest-running and most successdful non-sports promotions in history. From 1933 to 1954, they offered photos of popular movie stars on the inside lids to their single serve cups of ice cream. In all but the final year, you could save up enough lids to send in and you'd get a large color photos, printed on heavy paper stock, of your favorite star. The premiums came with two ...holes pre-punched along the side (1935-1945) or along the top (1946-1953), so you could put them in a special album the company also offered. There were twenty four different actors available each year from 1933 to 1953, all but the first two years in color. It makes for quite a challenge to collect the complete set!!This photo is from 1933, the first year the premiums were produced. It's also the only year the premiums were 8 1/2 x 11; later years featured 8 x 10 photos. This first year, the premiums were in black and white, featuring a wide white border and a blank back; in fact, there's no indication on the premium at all that it was issued by Dixie Ice Cream. This one features acting legend Helen Hayes; it's in very nice condition, except for a couple of punch holes on the left border that the original owner added so the premium could be placed in a binder (see scans for condition).
